Millennials/Gen Y: ""echo boomers" children born during this time have had constant access to technology in their youth."
Opinions of Millennials: stay at home longer, expect to be millionaires with little to no effort, criers, quit when things get hard...etc.
For the past week all I have been hearing about is millennials in the work place. We are seen as high risk. What do I mean by high risk? This means that although we adapt to change easily and are more open minded, in the work place they see us as someone who will jump ship when things get too hard; must be from all those participation trophies we all got. Is that how everyone sees us?
If you have read my other blog post I talk about my struggles throughout last year, that doesn't mean I was going to give up because it was too hard. It means I was weighing my options and what I thought would be best for me. I grew up in a family where you work hard for what you want and it isn't just given to you. I don't think I’m just going to wake up one day and have millions of dollars in my bank account from doing absolutely nothing. I have mentioned before how family is the most important aspect in my life, so does that mean that what happened in my life last year makes me a risk because I would much rather be with my family and support them? Does that make me any less of a professional? I think it makes me human, someone who wants to be part of their families support system instead of just watching from afar.
I'm not sure I agree with the view society has about millennials. Not all of us consider ourselves part of that group. We see ourselves as leaders, business owners, hard workers, striving for success. We want to be happy in our jobs, our careers and not settle for anything less than that. Everyone deserves to have a happy life.
Do you agree with societies view of us a millennials?

I believe many of us are, but I feel many elders are way too quick to label us! A lot of us have what it takes to go very far in our careers, and some of us sit back and wait for handouts. So other than your family, what is your "Why"? Why do you do the things you do, why do you work so hard?
ReplyDeleteI agree I feel like there are certain millennials who do wait for handouts expecting life to be just that easy but it's definitely not especially if you are working your ass off day in day out. My why? My family to make them proud but to make myself proud. I want to be happy with the work I put in, I want my team to know they are supported by me no matter what. I want those around me or who work with me to be happy. I work hard so at the end of the day I can say I did everything I could possibly do to make my team happy but myself proud. I value the efforts of my team and never want them to think I never gave them 110%.
ReplyDeleteThat kind of attitude and work ethic is the kind of thing that will change peoples outlook and perception in millenials and I'm sure its contagious to your family friends and members of your team! Your "Why" is beautiful and as long as you keep that in your mind when youre setting your goals and overcoming obstacles you will go very far! You may be young but you seem very wise! This post was really cool and I hope it makes people think the way it made me.
ReplyDeleteThank you that really does mean a lot. I know the change will not come overnight but I hope it does make people think. That was my sole purpose of writing this post to make people think and to have an open discussion about it. Thank you again!
