Do you know what it's like to not hear from your family or loved ones for more than just one day after a natural disaster? The endless thoughts in your mind of what could be happening, what your family could be going through?
Day in, day out I would see posts of friends/families looking for any news of their loved ones. I was one of those people and it wasn't just one day, it was four. Four long days of calling every number I had in my phone to see if by some chance they would answer and all I would get was a voicemail or just let it ring until I lost hope. To work day in, day out and have a select few people have the diligence to ask me about my family left me to feel like only one person actually cared. That one person gave me strength to keep going, to keep it together for my family, to be the strength they needed from afar.
I have seen many share their story, our story together. Our story though, seems to be over shadowed by social news but why? The devastation is real, lives are changed forever. The Puerto Rico you saw in some of my recent posts is no longer the same.
The pictures I am about to share are not mine, they are pictures from #prayforpuertorico.
S.O.S We need water & food! |
While everyone else is focusing on unimportant news, this THIS is what the people of Puerto Rico are dealing with, they are living in this devastation. Day after day, they are struggling to survive in need of basic necessities. All the while this is not being publicized, the struggle of our people is being ignored. There have already been a number of suicides because people cannot deal with the devastation or live in these conditions. Families are unable to leave their homes due to the sitting water and the fear of zika and dengue. You can already start to smell the rotting corpses of dead animals due to the heat and humidity. Gas is being rationed out and people are waiting in line to get the slightest of help. My grandma waited in line 7 hours for a piece of ice and she is down to the water that she collected before the storm. She is on the west side of the island, which is not even being reported about. I know many of us want to help and send money or care packages but unfortunately the items aren't being distributed across the island; they are being stored in facilities. Ships and airplanes aren't being given permission to land in order to provide relief.
The people of Puerto Rico and their government have come together in order to support one another. It would be amazing if we could all rally together and support them as well. This struggle for food, water, and electricity will last for a couple of months. Let's spread the real story, the real news. Let's rally together to be the hope they need, the light at the end of the tunnel.
Please share this post and spread the news of what is really going on in Puerto Rico.
Noshka XOXO
